Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
