American flight controllers are increasingly looking for second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty without pay amid the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their duties without pay.

But some have been missing, causing terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by weather and additional factors.

Over 3,000 US flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the pressure," Duffy remarked in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their worries directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, can I find an alternative of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports said travel would be held up due to a lack of employees - among the peak after the shutdown began.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second-longest shutdown in history.
