Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Parent Company Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced that he plans to personally create the controversial flavor within a personal collection showcasing issues the company was prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Between Founders and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement escalates the ongoing conflict among the world-famous ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have claimed how the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem for Support
The entrepreneur announced via social media how he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become a symbol for support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement and Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first created several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts and Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated that he will create other frozen dessert varieties that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years of involvement, citing concerns regarding how the company's autonomy was compromised following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen commented that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can achieve its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he told journalists.
