British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect behind a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
