Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.

The victims are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
