The child of previous South African President Jacob G Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related accusations at the commencement of her trial in the port city of Durban.

Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being prosecuted over comments she posted on digital networks in the past during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that came after the detention of her dad.

A period of disorder in several parts of the country in mid-2021, including looting and arson, left at least 300 individuals dead and caused damage worth an estimated 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).

The defendant has been accused of fuelling this violence and confronts accusations of encouragement to commit terror acts and civil unrest.

History of the Case

The unrest were centered in the areas of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and came after the previous president's apprehension for defying a legal directive to testify at an probe into accusations of corruption while he was holding office.

She has always refuted the charges against her, with her legal representative in the past calling the prosecution's case as weak.

She has also repeatedly claimed the accusations against her were an attempt to resolve political disputes with her dad after he established his own political organization and competed against the ruling party.

Endorsement and Case Arguments

This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which claimed the case was an "misuse of authority" and a "organized effort" of "political and kinship persecution" against the previous head of state and his family.

A handful of followers from her group, uMkhonto weSizwe, appeared outside the provincial high court, while her father and other party leaders participated in the proceedings inside.

Her legal team has maintained that the proof presented by government lawyers is inadequate and lacks substantial grounds for a criminal finding.

Central Elements of the Legal Proceedings

  • Online posts from four years ago form the basis of the government's case
  • Violent protests in 2021 resulted in significant deaths and economic losses
  • The individual on trial confronts multiple allegations of encouragement to violence
  • Judicial hearings are projected to continue for multiple weeks

The trial continues as all parties present their cases before the court in what is expected to be a closely watched judicial process with substantial policy consequences for South Africa.
