The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Inclusion in England's Test Series Squad
England have chosen a 12-man squad just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise spot.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the tourists will delay until the day of the initial match to determine whether the venue pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are part of the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about their pace bowler’s fitness.
The other seamers complete the bowling group, with the latter most likely to be omitted if the spinner makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Favor Seamers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged several past matches.
In those games, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Of those 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.
At a venue renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers is still the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
Previously there was speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to provide some spin while also strengthening the lower order.
However McCullum has opted to keep faith with Bashir, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” adding that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” he said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they perform and excel out here.”
