Torrential Downpours Exacerbate Conditions for Evacuated Residents of Gaza, UN Warn

Almost 55,000 households have currently been impacted by the rains, with their items and shelters ruined.

Heavy storms over the past week have intensified the already dire situation of the many hundreds of thousands of evacuated Palestinians in the territory, according to aid agencies.

"Horrendous" Night Creates Grave Threats

A spokesman detailed the previous night's conditions as "terrible", with rain so heavy that around 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the terrain.

"The recent weather was really difficult for the people. The downpours were so strong... And the gusts were so forceful," noted the official.

Authorities voice grave concern that minors sheltering in makeshift shelters in wet attire will fall victim to hypothermia and additional illnesses.

Deaths and Widespread Destruction

Health authorities have confirmed that one baby has passed away from hypothermia and a minimum of 11 other people have died in roof cave-ins caused by the severe weather.

Additional accounts suggest a higher fatality count. Spokespeople said that numerous structures had fully given way and dozens had collapsed partially.

  • Almost 55,000 families harmed by rains.
  • More than 40 designated shelters severely flooded.
  • Countless residents required to move once more.

Assistance Efforts Considered Insufficient

Agencies have stepped up distribution of tarpaulins, blankets and clothes after the halt in hostilities began, but they stress there is still not enough aid getting in.

"Agencies are operating tirelessly to deliver that aid and to hand it out, but the size of the requirements is so immense that we continue to see many thousands of individuals and children who are genuinely suffering every night," cautioned one official.

Ongoing Issues and Truce Plans

The next stage of the ceasefire encompasses arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the pullback of military forces, and other conditions.

Relief groups have highlighted the imperative for "greater and continuous relief to respond to pressing and long-term needs."

The war was initiated by an offensive in October 2023. Subsequent campaigns have resulted in a substantial number of lives lost in the area, according to health ministry data.
